Field-to-dashboard vegetation management

We built the data system behind an island-wide utility vegetation program for Hawaiian Electric, in partnership with Big Island Tree Service — programmed tablet surveys, trained crews, and a clean pipeline from the field to live dashboards and monthly reporting.

The challenge

Managing vegetation across an island-wide electric network generates an enormous amount of field data — and it's only useful if it's collected consistently and turned into something the utility can act on and report against.

What we did

We programmed Survey123 forms with built-in quality control and trained more than 20 crew members across 11 tablets to capture tree and vegetation data as they trimmed. That standardized data flows into a custom platform — live dashboards, charts, and maps — and into monthly reports delivered straight to the utility. The same data also drives the LiDAR and 3D-viewer side of the program for high fire-danger corridors.

The result

A large, growing, trustworthy dataset that gives Hawaiian Electric a live picture of the work and the vegetation across the island — and gives crews the field tools to do it consistently. See the LiDAR & wildfire side →
