Experience that runs deep
Our work spans the full geospatial field — GIS and application development, drone and aerial remote sensing, LiDAR, multispectral, survey and field-data programs — applied across wildland fire and fire mitigation, forestry, fisheries, land management, utilities and vegetation management, agriculture, and conservation. That range comes from real projects with serious partners, including the Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources, the U.S. Forest Service, the Oregon Department of Forestry, Hawaiian Electric, Big Island Tree Service, and Chinook Landscape Architecture — and more.
Why the ʻāhinahina
The plant in our logo is the ʻāhinahina — Hawaiian for "very gray," named for the fine silver hairs that sheath its leaves. Those hairs are not decoration. High on Haleakalā, they reflect a brutal sun and hold the little moisture the mountain gives. The ʻāhinahina is endemic to Hawaiʻi — it grows nowhere else on Earth — and only where conditions are hardest: raw volcanic cinder, intense sun, freezing nights, almost no rain. It grows slowly and patiently for years, blooms once, and is gone. By 1927 it had nearly vanished; careful stewardship brought it back.
We chose it on purpose. I was born and raised in Haiku, Maui, in the shadow of Haleakalā, where the ʻāhinahina has always grown above home. Hawaii Mapping is now based on Hawaiʻi Island, where its relatives hold the high ground on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa — a quiet through-line from where I'm from to where we work today. The ʻāhinahina takes the high ground and does precise, patient work in difficult terrain. It belongs to this place. So do we.
Local, certified, and accountable
Most high-end mapping in Hawaiʻi is still flown by mainland firms who fly in, collect, and leave. We're based on Hawaii Island (Big Island), so we mobilize quickly, keep travel costs down, and make field decisions with an understanding of island terrain, weather windows, and the cultural and environmental sensitivities unique to Hawaiʻi.
